Oncologic Surgery
Our vision is to provide world-class cancer care with the best and brightest minds, which includes specialists dedicated specifically to fighting cancer.
Hall-Perrine Cancer Center's surgical treatment removes tumors or parts of tumors in order to control the disease or cure the patient, where possible. This approach can be used as a therapy or comfort measure, as well, to help ease the patient's symptoms and improve their quality of life.
- MarginProbe® technology is used during early-stage breast lumpectomy surgeries and allows surgeons to detect whether there is any remaining cancer surrounding a removed lump. The MarginProbe System delivers clarity in real-time, reducing doubt and the likelihood of a second surgery. Hall-Perrine Cancer Center is the first and only hospital in Iowa using MarginProbe.
- SCOUT®
Using SCOUT technology, a tiny reflector is placed in the target tissue any time prior to breast cancer surgery. Using the SCOUT Guide, Dr. Vincent Reid is able to detect the reflector – which is the size of a grain of rice – to precisely locate the reflector and tumor within one millimeter of accuracy. Mercy was the first in Iowa to adopt the SCOUT system in 2016 as a standard of care for breast cancer surgery patients.
- TumorSight Viz™
With SimBioSys TumorSight Viz™ imaging technology, Mercy’s surgical team has access to enhanced MRI images before surgery. By sending these images through TumorSight Viz's advanced technology, surgeons receive detailed information about the tumor, such as its exact location and depth. This allows for more precise surgical planning, which enables surgeons to remove the tumor more effectively while also preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
Dominic Heffel,
MD, FACS
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon
- Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Clinic is under the direction of Dr. Dominic Heffel, MD, FACS, and provides care for breast cancer reconstruction surgery, along with traditional plastic and cosmetic procedures.
- MOZART®
Creates true 3D images of targeted breast lesion specimens and helps breast cancer surgeons to identify tumors more easily during lumpectomy procedures. The MOZART has also been shown to dramatically decrease the need for second surgeries to remove lingering cancer cells following a lumpectomy.
- Lymphoseek® uses nuclear medicine to assist in identifying breast cancer that has spread to the first regional lymph nodes, and that have the highest probability of harboring cancer. It allows surgeons to better map the location of the primary tumor for removal. This is the newest tool in Mercy's arsenal of breast cancer surgery technology.
- da Vinci robotic surgical system enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures, including prostatectomies and hysterectomies, through very small incisions with unmatched precision.
- Sophisticated surgery suites include voice-activation technology and the latest patient monitoring functions.
